Annotation:

In 1919, Max Pechstein met the physician Dr. Walter Minnich (1864–1946), who, during the difficult years of inflation, became a reliable supporter, collector, and patron of the artist. When Pechstein’s relationship with his art dealer Wolfgang Gurlitt broke down in 1923, the painter found himself compelled to manage his business affairs independently. Subsequently, hoping for profitable sales, he traveled to places such as Montreux in Switzerland, where he eventually settled for several years to work. During this time, a close and lifelong friendship developed between Minnich and Pechstein.

Throughout his stay in Switzerland, Pechstein created numerous works capturing the Alpine landscape — including depictions of valleys, mountains, and traditional wooden huts along streams. These paintings are distinguished by their immediate colour impact and an energetic, expressive brushstroke through which the artist vividly conveyed his experience of nature.

The painting Walliser Hütten (“Valais Huts”) was created from sketches Pechstein made during a trip to the Valais region in May 1923.
