In this iconic lithograph, Picasso depicts the painter Françoise Gilot sitting in an armchair. Gilot is wearing the so-called ‘Manteau polonais’, the coat that Picasso had brought her back from his trip with Paul Éluard to the peace congress in Poland in August/September 1948.
The artist had begun the lithograph in December 1948 in the Mourlot studios in Paris and completed it on 16 January 1949.
